Band on The Wall is back with a new Winter/Spring season of acclaimed international jazz artists warming up the stage.

Pianist/composer Kit Downes exploded on to the British Jazz scene playing with the band Empirical and then with his other ongoing project, Troyka and Acoustic Ladyland. Now, two years on, Kit has moved on to his own trio project and is joined by two long-time friends - award-winning bassist Calum Gourlay and rising drum star James Maddren. Their sound is immediately arresting with inspirations drawn from sources ranging from Bela Bartok and Keith Jarrett to Rufus Wainwright and endeavours to both celebrate the classic piano trio tradition and develop it in to new musical territory.

The 10-piece Nearly Dan are widely considered to be one one the finest tribute bands in the world and deliver covers of 70's legends Steely Dan which are remarkably similar in spirit as well as sound. They have a natural affinity for the meticulously crafted grooves and allusive lyrical style of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker's formidable and world-famous jazz rockers. Expect an evening in the company of the great classics that might include Do It Again, Reelin' In The Years, Hey Nineteen, Peg, Deacon Blues and Caves of Altamira.

Gwilym Simcock's new trio features the extraordinary classically trained Russian bassist Yuri Goloubev and young UK drum star James Maddren. They play a stunning mix of Simcock’s compositions and brilliant interpretations of great classics such as Black Coffee and Cry Me A River. For this very special concert they are joined by the extraordinary trumpeter Gerard Presencer who was Gwilym's tutor at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

Nils Petter Molvaer is an internationally acclaimed Norwegian trumpet player, composer and producer, who takes multiple music styles - jazz, ambient, house, electronic and break beats, as well as elements from hip hop, rock and pop music - and effortlessly reshapes them into unique and dramatic soundscapes of deep intensity. Known for his sublime live performances this promise to be another truly spectacular night at Band on The Wall.

Hailing from the New York free jazz scene, Buffalo Collision features some of the most exciting and experienced players around consisting of The Bad Plus' brilliant pianist Ethan Iverson and drummer David King, alongside the thrilling alto saxophonist Tim Berne and cellist Hank Roberts. Noted for their intelligent, passionate playing that pushes free jazz boundaries, expect this to be a thriller of a set.

The other half of the night is given over to trioVD. Hailing from Leeds, their visceral approach to jazz has led to their high voltage live shows, with their trademark mix of machine-gun drumming, wild improv antics of sax, electrics and spiky guitar, quite simply blowing audiences away.

DAVE O’HIGGINS + ERIC ALEXANDER QUINTET

This collaboration began in 2008 on the suggestion of Danish drummer, Kristian Leth, that saxophonists Dave O'Higgins & Eric Alexander would make a great team. This has certainly proven to be the case – the sparks have flown on the stage and the two protagonists have struck up a great rapport.The band has already undertaken two European tours, kicking off at Ronnie Scotts in London. The album, Sketch Book (Jazzizit Records) was released in March 2009 to rave reviews. The third European tour will began in Copenhagen with three nights at the renowned Jazzhouse Club. Expect some roaring 2-tenor blowing in the time honoured tradition, with a respectful doffing of the cap to Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt, Ronnie Scott and Tubby Hayes and many other greats.

NIK BARTSCH’S RONIN

Ronin is the zen-funk jazz quintet founded in 2001 by Swiss composer and pianist Nik Bartsch, together with Kaspar Rast (drums), Björn Meyer (bass), Andi Pupato (percussion) and lately Sha (bass/contrabass clarinet). Their music consistently follows the same aesthetic vision under various instrumental guises - creating the maximum effect by minimal means.

The Steve Howe Trio consists of the legendary guitarist from Yes and Asia alongside his son Dylan Howe on drums and Ross Stanley on hammond organ. Formed in 2007 their sizzling live jazz sets create a friendly and dynamic tension between Howe's Yes lineage, his own compositions and the hard bop of choice from Dylan and Ross. Often their set list includes songs from jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell, who Howe cites as an important reference point for his work, alongside Yes classics and works from Howe's long and illustrious solo career.

PORTICO QUARTET

Described as being like an indie band that plays post-jazz, Portico Quartet, (Nick Mulvey hang drum, Duncan Bellamy drums, Milo Fitzpatrick double bass and Jack Wyllie saxophones and electronics), play melodic, beautiful, rhythmic music that mixes the inspiration of Philip Glass and Steve Reich with a very contemporary kind of jazz improvisation. It’s the blend of ethereal saxophone, the steel pan-like Hang, clattering drums and earthy double-bass that gives their music it’s unique, beautiful sound and that has seen them compared to Radiohead, e.s.t and The Cinematic Orchestra amongst others. Their new album Isla, produced by legendary producer John Leckie was released to critical acclaim last October.

One of the last true great singers from the 60's glory days of jazz, R&B, gospel and soul performs live at Band on the Wall.

Considered a national treasure in the USA, Marlena Shaw's 40-year career reads like a who's who's of music having fronted or played with, amongst others, Count Basie, Ray Brown, Sammy Davis Jnr, Benny Carter, Joe Williams and Frank Foster. She produced or sung on some of the era's best know hits and was also the first woman vocalist to be signed to Blue Note. With a later, highly successful foray into disco with the massive hit Touch Me In The Morning, her legacy continues as new-found fans with artists in the rap, dance and hip hop genres such as DJ Shadow, Diplo, Faze Action and St Germain sampling her work.

DAN BERGLUND’S TONBRUKET

Former e.s.t. bassist Dan Berglund releases his first solo recording in early 2010, a brand new set of self-penned music that draws from his background in both jazz and rock, and of course grows out of his seminal role in the extraordinary e.s.t story. After the untimely death of Esbjörn Svensson in June 2008, Dan and drummer Magnus Öström decided that it would be impossible to just add another musician to the trio to replace Esbjörn. Berglund has assembled a terrific quartet of fellow Swedes, playing music that stretches from e.s.t to Pink Floyd to Royksopp to Arvo Part.

Following his stunning appearance during Band on the Wall's opening season with Mercury Music Prize nominee Polar Bear, internationally-acclaimed drummer Seb Roachford returns to the Band on the Wall stage with his jazz punk outfit Acoustic Ladyland. By turn ferocious and frenetic with the capacity to pare the instrumentation down to a raw and mininimal level, Roachford's partners in crime in their stunning ack-ack aural assualt are Pete Wareham(vocals, tenor & baritone sax), Chris Sharkey (guitar) and Ruth Goller (bass guitar). Destructive, brilliant and utterly, utterly thrilling.

Band on the Wall has been one of the cornerstones of Manchester's thriving music scene for the greater part of the last century and exists to bring the best music from around the world to the stage. In addition to championing the finest world music, folk, blues and jazz, Band on The Wall was also at the centre of Manchester’s punk scene in the late 1970s where Buzzcocks, The Fall and Joy Division played some of their earliest concerts.

It has a global reputation for showcasing a vast array of accomplished and respected artists and musical genres from around the world and is recognised as a venue that promotes equality and diversity through music.

Band on the Wall is a registered charity run on a not-for-profit basis. It acknowledges the support of Arts Council England, Heritage Lottery Fund and Manchester City Council.
